Carnatic Music Residency Begins

Marcus, Nirmala and Shrini improvise a raga.

Prakash welcomes the players to her home.

We were so happy to begin our Carnatic music residency with our esteemed teacher and veena virtuoso, Nirmala Rajasekar.  Nirmala, mridangam drum player Shrini Vasan and tabla player Marcus Wise set up in our 3rd floor lounge and played to the long term care residents (with the staff getting a bonus preview as well!)  We got an introduction to the instruments, and we heard music celebrating Maha Shivaratri, honoring Lord Shiva. The day is a remembrance of overcoming darkness and ignorance in life; it is observed by chanting prayers, fasting and meditating on ethics and virtues such as self-restraint, honesty, non-injury to others and forgiveness. We hope to have a full house in attendance for the next class on Thursday night.  This next class will be resident/audience participation, so come check it out!

Nirmala explains to the group about her instrument, the veena.
