Holiday Open House 2016

Thank you to all the Jones-Harrison residents and their families for attending this past Saturday’s Holiday Open House.  We mixed things up a bit this year, having music and crafts throughout the building.  Families and staff had a blast taking residents to all the various activities.  We opened up with dancing music provided by the Squires Band, while we decorated some fine looking sugar cookies in Julia Commons.  We were treated to classical guitars from Nick & Jared in the Assisted Living Dining Room while enjoying fabulous appetizers and sweets provided by our wonderful new dining service company, Unidine.  Up on 3rd floor, we had the musical stylings of Rita Lusky on piano while we created beautiful ornaments and holiday cards.  Second floor was singing up a storm – literally – as lead by our own Steph & Judy from our therapeutic recreation department.  And we wound up the event back in the Centrum for a holiday sing-a-long lead by guitarist Eric Iverson.  Many thanks to the staff and volunteers who helped keep the party rolling, to our wonderful musicians, but most especially to the families who helped us kick-off the wonderful holiday season for the residents here at Jones-Harrison.

Everyone enjoyed the food and decorations, including this year's ice sculpture.

Men’s Club Takes on the Big Issues of the Day

The men certainly had a lot to discuss in their first monthly Club gathering since the Elections.  Also on their minds was Pearl Harbor Day, the holidays and the Twins.  Many thanks to Mary Lou Voigt for generously sponsoring this month’s Men’s Club.

Continuing Education on Ethics

Many thanks to Scott McRae, Director of Spiritual Care, Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor and Medical Ethics Committee Co-Chair at Park Nicollet Health Services and Methodist Hospital for providing an enlightening and interactive presentation on Ethics and End of Life Care: The Journeys of Grieving, Dying and Death at Jones-Harrison on November 30th.  The Jones-Harrison social services staff were pleased to welcome a number of their colleagues to the class.

Halloween Hijinx

Everyone at Jones-Harrison was having a howling good time on Halloween.  Assisted Living residents learned fun facts about this tricky day, and had some cute little visitors come trick and treating as well.  Then the staff, along with some creative residents, showed off their fabulous costumes.  A little music, with refreshments and treats, finished off a fun filled day.

Thanks to the family and friends that participated with the residents and staff of Jones-Harrison in our costume contest!

We had lots of fun celebrating the Jones-Harrison residents born in October.  Seems the theme color for many of our birthday gals was red.  Many thanks to Bill Cagley for providing the musical entertainment.

Massage is a Soothing Perk at Jones-Harrison

As a Jones-Harrison resident, I feel quite lucky to have a Massage Therapist available on-site to work on occasional aches and pains.  Even better,  Linda, our Massage Therapist, will come right to my apartments to work on my ‘sore spots’.  I encourage all residents to take advantage of this wonderful perk.  Did you know massage can ease pain in cancer patients, relieve lower back pain, and lessen shoulder pain? And as I  know firsthand, she does wonders on worn out knees!

The healing techniques of massage have been around for thousands of years – since Greek and Roman times and before.  In as little as 15 minutes, moderate pressure massage, such as Linda does, offers relief from a stiff neck or it can just relax you for the rest of your day. In the hands of a good massage therapist, massage can provide stress relief for just about anyone.  Something to keep in mind if you are considering joining our Jones-Harrison family.

Your Roving Reporter, with a relieved knee, Dorothy K.

Pumpkins, Popcorn and Bunnies, Oh My!

The residents of Jones-Harrison Assisted Living have been very busy the last few weeks.  They were joined by students from Breck to help carve pumpkins.  They went to see the movie “the Dressmaker” fueled by plenty of popcorn courtesy of our #1 volunteer Rosemary.  And they had a very special visit from the Bunny Companions.  And off they go today to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.  Hard to keep up with this crew! View all the fun photos!
