Out and About

Our long term care residents at Jones-Harrison have been out and about enjoying the June weather.  First up was a trip to Psycho Suzi’s for Lunch on the patio; then it was off to the Minnesota Zoo for lunch (vegetarian, of course!) and to visit the animals.

Did you ever feel like someone was sneaking up on you from behind?

Jones-Harrison participates in Outing Dementia at Pride

Many thanks to everyone who came to our tent in Boomertown at the Twin Cities Pride Festival to learn more about the Outing Dementia project, a collaboration between Jones-Harrison and Training to Serve in cooperation with the Alzheimer’s Association. With funding from a grant from the Minnesota Board on Aging, materials have been developed to educate the LGBT population on the importance of diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease to allow time for planning for legal, financial and housing in the short and long term.  Additional thanks to the volunteers from these organizations for giving of their time to answer questions at our “hot” location.

Big Crowd at June Men’s Club at Jones-Harrison

We had a full house for the June’s Men Club at Jones-Harrison.  Must have had a lot to talk about between the US elections, the gun vote sit-in at the Congress, and the vote for Great Britain to leave the EU.

Thanks to all the men from Jones-Harrison Assisted Living and Long Term Care for their lively participation in Men's Club.

Outing Dementia Project at Golden Valley Pride Festival

Jones-Harrison received a grant from the Minnesota Board on Aging to create materials and outreach opportunities to the LGBT community around Alzheimer’s and Dementia awareness in partnership with Training to Serve with cooperation from the Alzheimer’s Association.   The project has been named “Outing Dementia” and we are seeking to encourage the LGBT community to pursue a medical diagnosis if someone or someone they know is experiencing memory loss, to help better plan for the housing, financial and legal issues that arise with an Alzheimer’s and Dementia diagnosis, with special considerations and obstacles this community might face.

Outing Dementia will have a booth at this weekend’s Golden Valley Pride Festival which takes place on Sunday, June 12th, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Brookview Park; a map to the event can be found on the Festival website.  The booths aren’t pre-assigned, but we should be pretty easy to find.  Look for the Outing Dementia logo and volunteers from Jones-Harrison, Training to Serve and the Alzheimer’s Association.  Some of the materials we have been working on will be ready in time for this event; others will be in a few weeks.

Outing Dementia will also be at the Minneapolis Pride Festival in the Boomertown section on June 25th and 26th.  Click on this map to find the Boomertown location.  All of the Outing Dementia materials will be available at this event.

Jones-Harrison management and staff have been through training directed by Training to Serve to ensure everyone at Jones-Harrison is cared for in a respectful and appropriate manner.  We are dedicated to non-discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Please come by and see us at the Festivals.

Residents of Jones-Harrison Assisted Living took advantage of the sunny day on Thursday to retreat into one of the courtyards to create a song with Father Ron, relax and read the newspaper, get a wonderful hand massage, or, with the help of our master gardener Peach, plant the flower beds for all the residents to enjoy.
